Many of us have been busy sewing up face masks / coverings the past few months. I’ve tried making some of the popular styles including the basic pleated mask, pleated mask with a filter pocket, curved fitted mask, and 3D mask.
In this video, I share my thoughts on each type of mask style (what I like and don’t like) and why I now prefer to sew 3D masks.

Note: I am not a medical professional and these are non-medical grade face coverings. Do your research when it comes to individual and family safety.
Typically, hospital and healthcare workers are not permitted to wear homemade / sewn personal protective equipment (PPE). That being said, updated CDC guidance does advise healthcare professionals to use “homemade masks” as a “last resort.”
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/ppe-strategy/face-masks.html
https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/12/6/05-1468_article
“In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.“
Please note that homemade masks are NOT considered PPE and won’t protect you from contracting disease or illness. (More from the CDC)
