Saying no when asked to sew for other people, probably one of the hardest things to do!
“Will you hem my pants?”
“Can you make me new curtains for my house?”
“I need a dress for an event next week, can you make it for me?”
“Saw an outfit in a magazine, can you duplicate it? I’ll pay you…”
While we love our family and friends, not all of us have the time, motivation, or patience to respond to the sewing requests you get when they find out you can sew.
Let’s start a conversation here!

DO YOU SEW FOR OTHER PEOPLE?
Personally, I’ve chosen to only sew for others as gifts. Operating and producing content for Sewing Report is also extremely time consuming, and i literally am not able to sew anything other than my own projects.
Sewing by request is too stressful for me right now, and I feel that once money/cost is introduced a couple things happen…
1) It zaps all the joy out of the project
2) There’s a potential for the customer to nitpick over the quality/design
3) I’d feel pressured not to charge family/friends a real price, and then I would feel resentful at not getting paid a fair wage
There’s also the factor of being able to sew what I want to sew, not what other people request. For me, the fun of sewing comes from choosing or designing a pattern, curating the fabric, envisioning the end result.
PODCAST RECOMMENDATION:
James turned me onto a podcast called ‘Making It’ – a group of woodworkers talking about the creative process, selling handmade items, and producing YouTube videos.
A recent episode talked EXACTLY about this issue and it’s definitely worth a listen:
